Alexandria Public Schools is seeking a dependable and skilled Transportation Maintenance Technician to join our team. This position supports the safe and reliable operation of the district’s school bus fleet through routine maintenance, preventative servicing, inspections, and mechanical repairs.

The ideal candidate will have mechanical experience, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while collaborating with our transportation team.

Key Responsibilities

The Transportation Maintenance Technician will:

  • Monitor the condition of school buses and check fuel, oil, and fluid levels.
  • Assist with preparing buses for state inspections.
  • Assist with mechanical repairs and troubleshooting, including engines, electrical systems, brakes, tires, seats, and heaters.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance and servicing of vehicles.
  • Assist with bus retrieval when mechanical problems occur and work with drivers to resolve mechanical issues.
  • Perform emergency repairs as needed.
  • Maintain accurate mileage and maintenance records and perform basic data entry.
  • Assist with inventory of parts, tools, and supplies.
  • Open and prepare the garage and vehicles for daily operations.
  • Recommend alternatives when a bus is out of service.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for bus-related problems.
  • Assist with the daily operations of the transportation shop.
  • Attend meetings, workshops, and required training.

What We're Looking For

Successful candidates will have:

  • A high school diploma or GED and minimal experience as a mechanic, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • An associate degree or technical degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Knowledge of mechanical tools and equipment, including drills, grinders, saws, air compressors, wrenches, air tools, torches, and similar tools of the trade.
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions and complete tasks accurately.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to make basic mathematical calculations and maintain accurate records.
