The Assistant Mechanic supports the daily maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of the district’s transportation fleet. This position assists with vehicle inspections, preventative maintenance, repairs, and transportation operations while also driving a school bus route to help ensure safe and reliable transportation services for students.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Monitor the working condition of district vehicles, including checking fuel, oil, and fluid levels.
  • Perform routine cleaning of buses and vehicles, including sweeping floors, removing trash, cleaning windows, washing vehicles, and scrubbing floors and walls.
  • Drive school bus route
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment.
  • Perform summer bus cleaning and detailing.
  • Assist mechanics in preparing buses for state inspections.
  • Support repairs involving engines, brakes, tires, seats, heaters, and other mechanical systems.
  • Assist with preventative maintenance and routine vehicle servicing.
  • Help retrieve buses experiencing mechanical issues and assist drivers with troubleshooting concerns.
  • Provide emergency repair assistance when needed.
  • Maintain mileage records and complete basic data entry for maintenance tracking.
  • Assist with inventory management of parts and supplies.
  • Open and secure garage facilities and vehicles as needed.
  • Recommend alternatives when buses are out of service.
  • Participate in on-call support for transportation-related mechanical issues.
  • Support daily shop operations and attend required meetings, training sessions, and workshops.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of district transportation policies and procedures.
  • Understanding of state and federal transportation regulations.
  • Knowledge of vehicle inspection procedures and maintenance documentation.
  • Ability to safely operate mechanical tools and equipment, including drills, grinders, saws, air compressors, wrenches, air tools, and torches.
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to operate a school bus, two-way radio, and PA system.
  • Basic knowledge of groundskeeping and snow removal equipment.
  • Basic computer and phone skills.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Knowledge of First Aid practices preferred.
  • Ability to model district expectations and maintain positive working relationships with staff, students, and families.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous mechanical experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Associate’s degree or technical training in a related field preferred.

Special Requirements

  • Ability to obtain a Minnesota Class B License with School Bus and Passenger Endorsements.
  • First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
