We are seeking a qualified and dedicated American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to support students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, or who require interpretation services under a 504 plan. This role ensures students have full communication access in the educational environment through ASL and other appropriate communication methods. The interpreter will work under the supervision of the Director of Student Support Services.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide fluent, accurate ASL interpretation/transliteration at a natural conversational pace for students in classroom and school-related settings.

  • Facilitate communication in accordance with each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan.

  • Use total communication strategies based on the unique needs of each student.

  • Collaborate with the educational team to ensure consistent access to instruction and participation.

  • Support instruction by reviewing class materials, creating vocabulary lists, and reinforcing lesson content.

  • Educate classroom teachers on the role of the interpreter and support effective integration.

  • Assist with classroom technologies used to support student communication needs.

  • Interpret for extracurricular events, parent meetings, and other school functions as needed.

  • Adapt classroom language and materials to meet the student’s language level.

  • Provide individual or group support under teacher direction.

  • Build professional rapport with students and staff while maintaining student privacy and autonomy.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an Interpreter Training Program affiliated with an accredited educational institution, or equivalent experience.

  • Required: National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 4.0 or higher, along with a passing EIPA written exam.

  • If not yet certified, must participate in a two-year provisional program with certification achieved before expiration.

  • Certified interpreters must maintain licensure by fulfilling Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Continuing Education Unit (CEU) requirements.
